Job Description:
Japan represents an important country for UCB’s sales growth, with significant opportunity for UCB’s rich pipeline of products.  UCB’s ambition is to ensure access to all patients who need these products in a sustainable way, with full recognition of their value.
 
The Pricing Strategist will be responsible to achieve UCB’s Pricing & Access objectives for the pipeline portfolio (with focus on BKZ, rare diseases, Briviact and Staccato in mid-term).
The Pricing Strategist will closely work with cross-functional teams locally but also with Global Mission / Access, Pricing and External Engagement as well as Regional cross-functional teams to inform the development of global materials, and to adapt these for the local strategy and value proposition operation to achieve target pricing and access outcomes.   The Pricing Strategist will have a clear view on Japanese ecosystem opportunities and challenges, and ensure alignment with global / regional strategies.  
Central to the role will be maintaining a clear view on priority opportunities to focus on, developing Japanese ecosystem insight at the appropriate level of depth, anticipating access landscape evolution and articulating local ecosystem needs, including evidence relevant to demonstrate product value.  
The Pricing Strategist will draw on these insights to identify Japan priorities and associated pricing and access strategy, communicate needs with Global / Regional teams, enable pricing and access launch excellence preparation in Japan (with clarity on critical success factors, a proactive engagement plan, relevant supportive evidence, value materials tailored to Japanese ecosystem needs and stakeholders), and support the Japanese Patient Value Brand Plans and other planning processes.
  • The Pricing Strategist will lead the development and execution of the strategy for pricing determination
  • Monitor and anticipate the evolving pricing and reimbursement landscape in Japan, including structural and process / methodology changes, payer approaches and key competitor price
  • Identify and define priorities and associated pricing to enable local pricing aligned to global objectives and approach
  • Communicate local needs to the Global Mission and APEX teams for key deliverables such as the evidence plan to inform (RCT, RWE) study design, value dossier, value story, indirect comparisons and economic models
  • Develop a pricing strategy for assets at an early stage in their lifecycle, focused on potential development / regulatory outcomes and product positioning options in line of therapy / site of care settings / drug delivery options to determine early preparation needs including evidence and external engagement requirements
  • • Develop early assessment of likely pricing determination method and long-term price forecast, and refine this assessment with increasing available product evidence and insight
  • Lead development of the pricing approach, payer / patient affordability / market research insights, materials for internal pricing approach and delegation of authority approval, pricing dossier and MHLW communications, negotiation strategy and execution
  • Manage pricing over the full product lifecycle
  • Engage with the evidence (including HEOR / RWE) generation objectives and plans for product lifecycle optimization
  • Align strategy with global strategy and overall brand objectives, with full cross-functional engagement and alignment, including regulatory, medical, and commercial
  • Engage with internal Japanese and global functions as needed, such as clinical development, medical affairs, marketing, statistical solutions and publication management
  • Specify relevant KPIs and develop mechanisms to track these
  • Develop pricing and content to contribute the internal annual processes, including the brand plan, budget and long-term forecast
Skills:
  • Ability to communicate professionally (written and orally) in English
  • Ability to develop and assimilate most critical insights of current and anticipated the Japanese pricing and reimbursement systems and processes
  • Ability to formulate optimal pricing and access strategies, optimal product positioning, and execution plans
  • Core understanding of multiple formats of evidence generation and how to develop an evidence strategy to support pricing, HTA, and produce relevant payer value information spanning the full product lifecycle from development to post-launch (covering RCTs; observational research studies; biostatistics; interpretation of clinical outcomes)
  • Independence and strong networking – being able to lead complex projects with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to design and compile clinical, humanistic and economic evidence and evaluation to fully demonstrate product value within the Japan pricing and reimbursement systems to support launch pricing
  • Leadership to inspire and influence cross-functional Japanese teams 
  • Ability to constructively challenge assumptions and influence others in a respectful manner
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex issues
  • Strong project leadership and time management, with ability to prioritise across multiple competing demands
